The Anchor Centre
The Anchor Centre has been a day centre for over 30 years, originally set up for ex-offenders. Although it worked in similar areas, it only recently became part of the LCPT.
In July 2000 a wet room was introduced as part of its day centre work. This was only the 3rd wet room to be opened within the UK. It was opened for two reasons; firstly the problem of street drinking in public places; and secondly that homeless people were not accessing the mainstream alcohol services. Structured key-working for service users has been in place for two years as a route into mainstream services which otherwise could not be accessed.
The Anchor Centre's wet room is different to the rest of the Trust's services as it allows clients to drink inside the building. The work is very important in allowing people to access support and intervention they would not otherwise have the opportunity to use.
Alongside the wet room, the Anchor Centre provides key working for clients working with major care needs requiring long term support, or for drinkers and drug users who have motivation and ability to achieve some progress and move on from The Centre. The Centre works with clients who have specific drug or alcohol problems, and clients who are polyusers, having dependency on both drugs and alcohol. The key working programme has been designed to be very flexible, fitting around the client group’s chaotic lifestyles and periods of absence.
The Anchor Centre also provides activities ranging from discussion groups to courses in IT skills, basic food hygiene and anger management with some leading to recognised qualifications.
The Anchor Centre's opening hours are :-
Monday - Friday 10am - 4.00pm
Access is available for both the Day Centre and the Wet Centre for drinkers only. Clients generally self-refer; however, places must be booked in advance. All clients will need to have an assessment carried out.
