Telephone Support & Referrals

The New Direction Under 19s Helpline offers telephone support from 9am - 1pm Monday - Friday offering advice and support, and taking referrals from professionals on

Under 18s Team

The Under 19s Team, known as New Directions works with young people and adults under the age of 19, to reduce risks from drug and alcohol use. The team provides information, advice and support to any young people concerned about their own substance use. The team also offers advice to professionals who work with young people and young adults, as well as concerned family and friends.

We are happy to help in a range of ways and accept that for some, information about the effects of drugs and alcohol is enough, while for others more intensive support to achieve important change is desired.

Drop-in & Case Work

Through either one-off appointments or regular appointments young people can access our services for many different reasons depending what the individual feels they need.

Through this one-to-one work, young people can access information and advice, have assessments to look at specific problems and explore potential solutions and gain ongoing support and advice from a member of the team to allow young people to make and maintain changes.

The New Directions Team can also make referrals to the NHS Community Drug and Alcohol Teams when detox (detoxification) and/or prescribing is appropriate; offer Auricular Acupuncture (ear acupuncture) which many people benefit from helping them to control their substance use; referral to specialist workers for help with employment and housing issues or access to specialist needle exchange services.

We endeavour to meet young people at places that are most accessible and comfortable for them.
